Maersk and its partners Renfe and Cepsa will conduct the first test in Spain with second-generation bio-fuels in the railway sector, making the Algeciras-Madrid corridor a decarbonised route.

On the non-electrified part between Algeciras and Cordoba, the partners will use renewable diesel fuel, and on the route from there to the capital, they will utilise renewable power.

The project will start in early July and will last three months. Cepsa, a Spanish corporation, will supply 160 tonnes of second-generation biofuel made from recycled cooking oils at its La Rábida Energy Park (Huelva), enough to cover five weekly roundtrips.

Renewable diesel will be used in the Renfe locomotives that transport Maersk clients' cargo from Algeciras to Cordoba. They will continue the journey to Madrid on electric trains fuelled by renewable energy in Cordoba.

The three companies attended the International Logistics Exhibition of Barcelona (SIL), the trade fair for logistics, transport, intralogistics, and supply chain management in Southern Europe, which is taking place this week at the Fira Conference Centre and bringing together representatives from over 650 companies.

Maersk, Renfe, and Cepsa executives presented this ground-breaking concept to promote the decarbonisation of the Algeciras-Madrid train corridor.
