According to a new report from Project44, the three major shipping alliances are preparing to cancel more than a third of their Asia sailings in the coming weeks in response to a drop in export cargo volumes. The alliance's strategy to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on cargo will further extend the delivery lead time, especially for routes to Northern Europe.

The data shows that between 17 and 23 weeks, THE Alliance will cancel 33% of its Asian routes, Ocean Alliance will cancel 37% of its Asian routes, and 2M Alliance will cancel 39% of its first routes.

MSC said the 18,340TEU "Mathilde Maersk" sailing on its Silk and Maersk AE10 Asia-Nordic route in early June will be canceled "due to continued severe market conditions". With the current severe market situation affecting ports and causing congestion throughout the supply chain, MSC plans to adjust the sailing schedule of its Asia-Mediterranean service network to match actual departure dates from Asia.

Hapag-Lloyd recently issued a notice that its MD1, MD2 and MD3 routes from Asia to the Mediterranean will cancel calls at Shanghai Port and Ningbo Port in the next five-week sailings.

Meanwhile, cargo delivery times from Asia to Northern Europe continued to increase due to lower export volumes and the resulting voyage cancellations, with Project44 data showing that over the past 12 months, cargo delivery times from China to Northern Europe and the UK have increased 20% and 27% respectively.
