CMA CGM to save millions by building methanol-fuelled container ships in China

According to reports, CMA CGM has reached an agreement with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group (DSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, to order six 15,000TEU methanol-powered container ships with a total price of about US$1 billion, which is scheduled to be delivered in the second half of 2025. . This is also CMA CGM's first methanol-powered container ship order.

Previously, CMA CGM has always been keen to invest in liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ships. For the first order of methanol-powered container ships, CMA CGM explained that in order to diversify the energy of its future fleet, it will achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The goal is to accelerate the decarbonization process by investing heavily in natural gas and methanol fuels. Together, these two fuel directions will help decarbonize them over the next few years.

CMA CGM is also the second liner company to order methanol-powered container ships after Maersk.

In 2021, Maersk has placed orders for 13 methanol-powered container ships, and the earliest one will be delivered in mid-2023. This year, Maersk still plans to order about 12 16,000TEU methanol-powered container ships, with a transaction value of more than $2.2 billion. Maersk believes that the use of methanol as power can reduce sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions by 99% and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25% compared to existing marine fuels, and is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to LNG.

Maersk CEO Shi Suoren once said that the construction of large carbon-neutral methanol container ships is a significant progress made by Maersk in its commitment to expanding carbon-neutral solutions.

Methanol-powered container ships are becoming the new favorite in the field of green ships, and similar orders may continue to increase in the future.
