Maersk container ship lost power en route, causing delays

The Rio Madeira, a container ship owned by Maersk, was en route from the port of Singapore to Sydney Harbour in Australia on October 20 when a power failure caused it to lose power. According to a notice issued by Maersk yesterday, the ship had emergency generator power after the incident, but it was not sufficient to support all functions required for the ship to perform navigation.

Maersk placed tugboats near the ship to ensure its safety and stability, after which technicians fixed the power problem and power was restored to the ship. The container ship Rio Madeira berthing at Hutchison Whampoa terminal in Sydney on Oct. 23 for repairs, Maersk said in the notice. Cargo handling is scheduled to take place at the Sydney DPW terminal with an ETA of 27 October.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority reported that the 5,900-TEU container ship was carrying 3,380 containers, including 126 dangerous goods containers.

According to the infomation that "Rio Madeira" has a capacity of 5908TEU, IMO 9348106. It was built in 2009 and flies the Singapore flag. At the time of the incident, the ship was serving Maersk's Asia to Oceania line 071-Southern Star service, voyage 238S. It may involve sharing accommodation with multiple shippers: HAMBURG SUD, MAERSK, MCC, ONE, SEAGO, SEALAND.

According to the shipping schedule, before the accident, the ship had called at Tanjong Palapas port (October 2 to October 3) and the international transit port of Singapore Port (October 3 to October 5). According to the scheduled shipping schedule, the ship will call at Tauranga Port, Napier Port and Lyttelton Port next. So far, the ship is still in berthing.
